No one wishes to be deceived. Everyone should desire to know the truth. Men sometimes are misled as to what is true; but they do not desire to be misled. Their need is to have the distinction made clear to them between reality — that which actually exists — and the various misconceptions in regard to reality.
Every thoughtful human being recognizes that there must be an ultimate truth to which all thought aspires. He longs to know this absolute truth. He is convinced that when he arrives at truth, he can rest, that all of his uncertainties will disappear. He knows that the knowledge of truth is the only actual knowledge, that all else is illusion. He is aware that men may believe anything — but they can know only truth, for nothing can be known which is not true.
Anyone who turns to Christian Science, given to the world by its Discoverer, Founder, and Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, will find the ultimate truth for which he longs; for Christian Science teaches that God Himself is Truth. As you study Christian Science, you can learn to understand the Truth which is God and to demonstrate this Truth in your own life. You will understand that Jesus' promise (John 8:32), "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free," need not be relegated to a dimly discerned and far-off future. On the contrary, Christian Science can prove to you that Truth accepted is practical and available and that it will begin at once to bring you the freedom promised by the Master.
In her search for God, Mrs. Eddy discerned that God is not only true, but that God is Truth itself and that all reality is found in Him. In her book "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the Christian Science textbook, she writes (p. 127), "If God, All-in-all, be the creator of the spiritual universe, including man, then everything entitled to a classification as truth, or Science, must be comprised in a knowledge or understanding of God, for there can be nothing beyond illimitable divinity." This illimitable divinity is defined in Science and Health as infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth, and Love. As one ponders the nature of God in the light of these synonyms, it becomes clear that divine intelligence is actually the only consciousness there is or can be. We become aware that since intelligence is the primal and eternal quality of Mind or Spirit, it is necessarily everywhere present and instantly available, the evidence of the omnipresence of God, divine Principle.
We are told in Science and Health that divine Principle is triune. I quote from this book (p. 331): "Life, Truth, and Love constitute the triune Person called God, — that is, the triply divine Principle, Love. They represent a trinity in unity, three in one, — the same in essence, though multiform in office: God the Father-Mother; Christ the spiritual idea of sonship; divine Science or the Holy Comforter. These three express in divine Science the threefold, essential nature of the infinite." One who accepts the triune Principle gains a sense of God as all-embracing Life, as the Father-Mother whose care and support forever encompass its ideas. Since divine Life is Principle, no time element can interfere with it. Principle knows nothing of material beginnings nor could it conceivably know an ending. As Life, it endows its ideas with vitality, strength, and permanence. It contains no destructive element and imparts none to its idea, man.
We are, of course, greatly interested in the true status of man. Naturally so, for we are greatly interested in ourselves, in our own possibilities and in our latent capacities for good. Christian Science furnishes us with knowledge of our true selves and shows us how to bring out this true self in our everyday experience. It differentiates clearly between the false concept of man as mortal, destined to die, and the immortal man created by God to express Him throughout eternity.
I am sure that everyone in this audience accepts the Biblical statement that man is made in the image and likeness of God. Because God is infinite Mind, He is necessarily the only consciousness, and spiritual man is dependent solely upon this Mind for his knowledge of himself and of the universe around him. In fact, his knowledge of God actually constitutes his consciousness. Beyond illimitable divinity there is nothing of which to be conscious. This perfect man, God's idea and likeness, is presented by the Christ. Science and Health says (p. 316), "Christ presents the indestructible man, whom Spirit creates, constitutes, and governs." The man whom Spirit creates in the likeness of Spirit is wholly spiritual; he must be and is subject to spiritual law, never to the so-called laws of matter. He finds himself only in God, his divine Principle. This Principle constitutes his being, for he is the reflection of Principle. What we know of God, we know of man as God's reflection, and this is all that we can know of man. No other knowledge is valid. Awareness of this most important fact enables us to discard the false theological concepts of ourselves as thwarted, frustrated human beings, and to exchange these false concepts for the true concept of man presented by the Christ. One who accepts this true concept of man finds a new sense of himself. Paul says (II Cor. 5:17), ". . . if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."
We may well ask ourselves, What are some of the old things which Paul assures us will pass away as we accept and express the man presented by the Christ? Have you ever felt limited in intelligence, opportunity, or ability? This limitation will pass away progressively as you claim and prove the possibilities and capacities of your true manhood. It is a natural yearning of the human heart to be wanted, appreciated, and loved. This experience of being appreciated and loved does not apparently fall to the lot of everyone. Should it not have come to you, claim the joy of God's presence; and the belief of being unwanted will disappear forever, as you recognize that God needs you in order to have full and complete expression. If this were not so, infinity would have less than infinite expression.
Christian Science teaches the
healing power of joy. The Bible says (Neh. 8:10), ". . . the joy of the
Lord is your strength." It can be said that into the experience of many
human beings there comes a time when they do not wish to go on; when, through
what appears to them to be loss or disappointment, they believe they have no
incentive to further effort. They lament the past and echo the words of the
Psalmist (Ps. 137): "By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we
wept, when we remembered Zion . . . For there they that carried us away captive
required of us a song; . . . saying, Sing us one of the songs of Zion. How
shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land?" It is imperative that we
sing this song. It is essential that amid seeming grief and defeat we rise
above their claims by praising God for His goodness and His love for us. The
carnal mind may declare that we have no cause for joy, that we are lonely
sojourners in a bleak and barren land. Yet, as we maintain our God-bestowed
joy, we shall find ourselves comforted. The Christ will come to us, as the
Bible promises (Isa. 61:3), "To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to
give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of
praise for the spirit of heaviness."
The ultimate presentation of the truth of being was promised by Christ Jesus. He not only promised his disciples that he would be with them, he also promised those who followed him a final revelation, the Comforter, which would lead humanity into all truth. This revelation has come. It is divine Science or the Holy Comforter, the ultimate revelation of the allness of God, good, and the nothingness of evil.
Mary Baker Eddy, to whom the revelation came, had experienced ill-health, human sorrow, and loss. This experience served to turn her ever closer to God, for she sought Him and Him alone. Each tragic experience deepened her understanding of God's presence and power. In her book "Retrospection and Introspection" she speaks of these dark hours. She speaks also of the glorious Truth which shone through the darkness and dawned upon her thought. She says (p. 23): "The world was dark. The oncoming hours were indicated by no floral dial. . . . Thus it was when the moment arrived of the heart's bridal to more spiritual existence. When the door opened, I was waiting and watching; and, lo, the bridegroom came! The character of the Christ was illuminated by the midnight torches of Spirit. My heart knew its Redeemer. . . . Souless famine had fled. Agnosticism, pantheism, and theosophy were void. Being was beautiful, its substance, cause, and currents were God and His idea. I had touched the hem of Christian Science."
Thus Christian Science, the final revelation of Love, was brought to the world. Because Mary Baker Eddy loved God supremely and never failed to follow where He led, out of the gloom of her human experience came the glory of the promised revelation. As Christ Jesus proclaimed and exemplified the fatherhood of God, so Mrs. Eddy discerned and proclaimed God's motherhood, which brings the assurance of God's never-failing care and all-enveloping love. What shall we say of the one who has brought the Science of the Christ to us; who has shown to us the unity of God and man; who has lifted us from a sense of foredoomed failure and shown us our birthright as children of God, created by Him to show forth the riches of His love? Sincere students of Christian Science recognize Mrs. Eddy as the one who, as foretold in the Scriptures, has brought the revelation of Truth, the Holy Comforter, to humanity. They know with what love and humility she has fulfilled her mission. Their gratitude to her can be expressed only as they prove the truths of Christian Science in their own lives and thus demonstrate its divine origin and its practical value to mankind.
After Mrs. Eddy had subjected the truths revealed to her to the broadest practical tests by healing the sick and sinning, her great love for God and man impelled her to write the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and to establish the Christian Science movement. Science and Health is not a complicated treatise, yet it is a book of infinite meaning. In fact, it sets forth the Science of infinity. It enables its students to avail themselves of the infinite resources of Mind. However, in order to do so it is essential that the student devote to the study of Science and Health the same fidelity that he would to the study of any other science. In the study of any science one is warned against any halfway knowledge of the subject. The very word science means systematized knowledge. The prophet Hosea said of his beloved Ephraim (7:8), "Ephraim is a cake not turned." Isn't this a rather graphic way of saying that Ephraim was half-baked? Is not this the trouble with many well-intentioned Christian people today? They do not put enough into their studies, or their spiritual activities, and they find that they get little from them.
This point is rather amusingly illustrated by the story of a retired clergyman who was asked to take a service in a country church. He took his little granddaughter with him. When they arrived, the clergyman put fifty cents in the collection box which he found in the vestibule of the church. After the service was over, he was told that it was customary to recompense the one who held the service by giving him the contents of the collection box. They opened the box and there was his fifty cents and nothing else. His little granddaughter said, "You see, Grandfather, if you had put more in you would have gotten more out."
We have all that is needed to understand and demonstrate the Science of the Christ. We have the Bible upon which our religion is founded. We use the King James Version of the Bible in our church services and in our Lesson-Sermons. Through daily study of the inspired word of the Bible, we gain a rich treasure of spiritual knowledge. Through Science and Health and Mrs. Eddy's other writings we gain definite knowledge of God and of the operation of His laws.
Sometimes earnest seekers for Truth, even after they have accepted Christian Science, may be somewhat perplexed that they do not progress more rapidly in the understanding of God and His laws. When this appears to be the case, it might be well to ask oneself: "Am I actually demonstrating what I do understand of Christian Science? Am I trying each day to express mercy and compassion? Do I try to exercise my God-bestowed dominion over the problems which present themselves each day?" The alert student of Christian Science is content with no halfway knowledge of God or of God's creation. He yearns to penetrate the secret of Jesus' compassionate healing. He desires to see God as He is. He longs for and expects the fulfillment of the promise (Is. 33:17), "Thine eyes shall see the king in his beauty."
Jesus expected great things of us who follow him. He said according to John (14:12), "He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father." In her book "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 192) Mrs. Eddy quotes these words of Jesus and says: "Such are the words of him who spake divinely, well knowing the omnipotence of Truth. . . . Luminous with the light of divine Science, his words reveal the great Principle of a full salvation." This full salvation revealed by Jesus is reiterated in Christian Science, for Christian Science comes with the comforting assurance that all men are to be saved, that not one child of God is to be excluded from His presence or deprived of His love. Science and Health (p. 593) defines salvation according to the Principle which Jesus revealed, as "Life, Truth, and Love understood and demonstrated as supreme over all; sin, sickness, and death destroyed." Of course, in absolute Truth — Life, Truth, and Love is supreme over all and there is no sin, sickness, or death to be destroyed. However, in human experience the demonstration of this absolute Truth seems to be a progressive individual experience, a putting off of the old man and a putting on of the new, "till," to use Paul's words (Eph. 4:13), "we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ."
Christ Jesus demonstrated man's perfect nature. Jesus expressed the Christ so completely that he was given the title Christ Jesus. He declined to accept the illusion of sinning mortal man for himself or for others. No argument of the carnal mind could obscure from him the presence of God. He knew himself to be one with God. He said (John 10:30), "I and my Father are one." Because Christ Jesus was Godlike, he was practical. He proved that the spiritual and the practical are not and cannot be separated. He proved that the law of Spirit frees from all the woes of flesh. Can anything be more practical than this? Science and Health says of him (p. 31), "It is the living Christ, the practical Truth, which makes Jesus 'the resurrection and the life' to all who follow him in deed."
Science and Health reveals Christ, Truth, as expressing the triune Principle (p. 331), "the spiritual idea of sonship." It tells us (p. 332) that the "Christ is the true idea voicing good, the divine message from God to men speaking to the human consciousness. The Christ is incorporeal, spiritual, — yea, the divine image and likeness, dispelling the illusions of the senses; the Way, the Truth, and the Life, healing the sick and casting out evils, destroying sin, disease, and, death." How priceless and how practical is this knowledge of the Christ. To hear this ever-present voice of the Christ demands a listening ear, so undisturbed by the din of mortal sense that it receives the divine message which dispels error and leads into the way of Life.
It is through sincere prayer that we learn to claim our unity with God. Prayer in Christian Science is not primarily the prayer of petition. It is more the recognition that all good is already provided and becomes evident through the realization of God's power, presence, and law. Through prayer, we learn to walk in the Christ way of Life. Science and Health says (pp. 9, 10): "Consistent prayer is the desire to do right. Prayer means that we desire to walk and will walk in the light so far as we receive it, even though with bleeding footsteps, and that waiting patiently on the Lord, we will leave our real desires to be rewarded by Him." Through prayer we know and realize the Truth which heals and saves. The student of Christian Science learns early not to question the practical value of the word of Truth. He has had too many proofs of its healing power. Students of Christian Science have seen the word of Truth, realized in Christian Science treatment, dispel both acute and chronic disease. They have seen the word of Truth heal sin and regenerate the sinner. Is there any surprise that after such experiences, they declare with the conviction of Paul (Heb. 4:12), ". . . the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword"?
In giving a Christian Science treatment, the practitioner makes his treatment specific and applicable to the case. His statements are characterized by divine logic. He declares spiritual facts. He bases his treatment on these facts. He realizes that God is the only power, presence, or activity in the universe. He recognizes that the God-created man expresses the divine consciousness and therefore has no capacity to express mental or physical discord. He maintains that the truth he declares is immediately evident in his case and acts as a law of healing to it. Science and Health tells him (p. 202), "The scientific unity which exists between God and man must be wrought out in life-practice, and God's will must be universally done." The practitioner denies any evidence in the case which obscures the unity of God and man. He claims for his treatment the healing power and activity of Truth itself.
So much human discord seems to be engendered by fear that the student of Christian Science learns to deny fear in every situation in which it is presented to him. Science Health says (p. 411); "Always begin your treatment by allaying the fear of patients. Silently reassure them as to their exemption from disease and danger." Jesus was constantly assuring his disciples that they had no cause for fear. Here, it might be argued that to human sense, mankind has every reason to believe that it is beset by danger on every side. Indeed, it is only in the light of the divine facts of being that we see that all fear is baseless and causeless. In the light of Truth, we see that man, the beloved of the Father-Mother God, is always encircled by His love and protected by His care. The acceptance of this comforting fact is sometimes all that is required for healing.
For example, a young boy, whom I know, had a severe attack of pain accompanied by high fever. Christian Science treatment was given in this case. However, after some days the illness was not healed. At this time the practitioner, who had been asked to help, discerned that the father was quite fearful as to the outcome of his son's illness. She called the house and asked to speak to the father, and assured him that he need have no fear for his son, since in reality the boy expressed the Life that is God and dwelt forever secure in the arms of divine Love. As they spoke, the father became aware that his sense of fear was delaying the healing. He resolved then and there to relinquish the fear and to trust his son to God. The conversation was not a long one. The father and the practitioner were more than a thousand miles apart. Yet, during the time they spoke, every vestige of pain and fever disappeared and the boy was completely healed.
Healing in Christian Science is of the greatest possible importance. Yet, Christian Science is not a mere medicine to be used when sickness besets us. Christian Science does indeed heal; however, the great value of the healing is the evidence which it presents of God's presence with man and man's unity with Him. Mrs. Eddy tells us in one of her Messages to The Mother Church ('02, p. 9), "The unity of God and man is not the dream of a heated brain; it is the spirit of the healing Christ, that dwelt forever in the bosom of the Father, and should abide forever in man." In the measure that the spirit of the healing Christ abides in each one of us, in that measure we can prove, here and now, our unity with God and heal those who call upon us for help. She asked one of her classes (We Knew Mary Baker Eddy, 2nd Series, p. 49), "What is the best way to do instantaneous healing?" As the one reporting the incident remembers, Mrs. Eddy answered her own question as follows: "I will tell you the way to do it. It is to love! Just live love — be it — love, love, love."
How deeply the sincere student of Christian Science desires to express love and how often it appears to him that he is far from succeeding in his efforts to do so. Yet, he can rejoice that his honest desire to express divine Love is sincere prayer, one that he can be sure will have an answer. In the measure that one loves, he lives. Mrs. Eddy says in one of her poems (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 388),
"Fed by Thy love divine we live,
For Love alone is Life."
To live worthily, one must express love. Divine Love is eternal, self-existent, indestructible Being. Love's necessity is to express itself, and since divine Love is infinite, its expression is universal and impartial. Love is the only consciousness there is or can be. In reality, the only conscious Mind in all creation is the Mind which is Love. This Mind is never opposed to Truth. Love is divine Principle. It consents to nothing which is not based on Principle. One who accepts divine Love as his Mind reflects God's healing power, for the Love he reflects makes the truth he speaks powerful, active, and vital. The sincere student of Christian Science knows that he must live and love the truth he speaks.
When the animus of love is present in the consciousness of the practitioner, the power of the word spoken is evident. When the patient joyously receives the word of Truth, declared by the practitioner, the healing appears without delay. No element of time, no period of convalescence need enter into Christian Science healing. For example, a friend of mine had recurrent attacks of severe pain. She was suffering from gallstones. She asked for help in Christian Science. The practitioner realized and made clear to the patient that pain is not a signal of disease or of danger. Neither is it the effect of any cause, since God, good, is the only cause. She declared these truths audibly to the patient, who went quietly to sleep. While she was sleeping nine or ten small stones were painlessly eliminated, and the patient was entirely well. This healing is one of innumerable healings of organic disease by means of Christian Science treatment. Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 162): "Christian Science brings to the body the sunlight of Truth, which invigorates and purifies . . . The effect of this Science is to stir the human mind to a change of base, on which it may yield to the harmony of the divine Mind." Healing in Christian Science might be epitomized as the human yielding to the divine.
All sickness has its inception in the carnal mind, which Paul says is enmity against God. Sickness exists only in a mortal or false sense of consciousness, for without this false sense of consciousness there is not even a belief of matter to express sickness.
Jesus taught that God is Spirit. Mrs. Eddy saw clearly that God, Spirit, could not be divided against Himself nor could He create anything contrary to His own nature. It therefore became clear to her that matter could have no actual existence. She says in Science and Health (p. 335): "Spirit, God, has created all in and of Himself. Spirit never created matter. There is nothing in Spirit out of which matter could be made." It was revealed to her that matter with its associated train of evils is the source of human woe. When she wrote Science and Health it was clear to Mrs. Eddy that matter is merely a false human belief without objective reality. At that time, she stood alone in this knowledge. Today, many physical scientists agree with her to a certain extent, for many of them agree that the so-called world of sense perception is a subjective one. For example, Professor J. S. Haldane says in his book "Materialism" (p. 134): "We have invented the various methods of science (he is speaking here of physical science) for our own practical purposes. If, however, we imagine that they are more than our own creations for our own practical ends, we are simply bowing down to graven images made by ourselves." Christian Science teaches that matter is only an unreal concept of the carnal, or mortal, mind. Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health (p. 86): "Mortal mind sees what it believes as certainly as it believes what it sees. It feels, hears, and sees its own thoughts."
How heartening it is to realize that there is no matter, no sick matter, no well matter, hence no sickness engendered by matter, and no material law. Science and Health says (p. 405), "The basic error is mortal mind."
When one realizes that he has only mortal mind with which to deal, his sense of fear is lessened, for he knows that he has dominion over his own thought and need not be influenced by the wrong thinking of others unless he himself accepts the wrong thought.
Christian Science can be proved because it is actually true. Every spiritual fact accepted by you is of practical value to you, for you can prove it in your present experience. One spiritual fact that is vital to all of us is that God has provided bountifully for all of His children. In reality not one of us has a need which has not already been supplied by our heavenly Father. It is important to accept this spiritual fact, for once we accept it, we can begin to prove it.
In order to prove for yourself God's abundant supply, be alert in watching the quality of your own thought. The consciousness of materiality is consciousness of restriction, limitation, and lack; while the consciousness of reality or spiritual consciousness supplants these false beliefs with the understanding that all that man requires is right at hand. In making any demonstration in Christian Science, spiritual thinking is essential. Have you ever stopped to consider that your value in your business, your job, or any other activity depends upon the quality of your thought? If you were doing no thinking at all, you would have neither job nor business. Then is it not true that your thinking supports the job rather than that the job supports you? Is it not what you put into your work in the way of intelligent thinking that enables you to do the work successfully?
Christian Science will enable you to do intelligent thinking. Christian Science brings to light the availability of the divine Mind. In the degree one demonstrates man's oneness with this Mind, divine intelligence is manifested in human experience. One who manifests divine intelligence in any degree will always be in demand, for his work will be characterized by harmony and originality. It will be well done and lovingly done, for he is reflecting in some measure the Mind that is Love. This Mind is forever supplying him with the wisdom and skill to do his work. It protects him from mistakes; it shows him what to do and how to do it. In the measure that he turns to Love to meet his every need, and refuses to acknowledge that lack can come into his experience, he finds this need supplied.
This was illustrated in the experience of a friend of mine, a student of Christian Science, who was manager of one of the branches of a large corporation. During the last war, many of the branch managers complained that certain necessary supplies were not available. At a meeting of the officers of this corporation, one of them asked, "How is it that we get complaints from most of our managers, but never a complaint from A?" mentioning the student of Christian Science by name. The reply came from another officer, "Because that man does not know how to do any negative thinking, and in some strange way he seems able to locate and obtain just what he needs." This student of Christian Science proved the truth of Mrs. Eddy's statement in Science and Health (p. 494), "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." Thousands have proved the truth of this much-loved statement. You and I can also prove it.
I should like to tell you of a striking illustration of the availability of Truth. A man I know was a pilot in the armed forces during the late war. While flying over the ocean, his plane was shot down. He was able to inflate the buoyant vest which he was wearing. However, in the rough sea, this held only his head and shoulders above the water. His first thought was, "I am all alone and there is no one to help me." Then he thought of Jesus reaching out his hand to Peter, as Peter was about to sink in the sea. He told me that he realized that the same divine power was present to lift him out of the water, for he recognized that God is everywhere present to save and to deliver. He said that with this realization all fear left him. After he was in the water six to eight hours a small boat appeared in that vast area. Despite the rough seas, the lone flyer was sighted; a lifeline was thrown to him, and he was pulled safely into the boat. Those who rescued him asked him how long he had been in the sea, and he told them from six to eight hours, and they said: "Man, that is impossible. No one could live for more than an hour — or two at the most — in that terrific cold." He replied, "I live, and I am unharmed." It was only the realization of God's power to save him — of God's law of eternal life — which enabled this student of Christian Science to prove his immunity to the material law that no one could survive in such cold. He recognized that it was his application of Christian Science which directed the boat his way and enabled his rescuers to find him.
Each day the Christian world prays in the words of Christ Jesus (Matt. 6:10): "Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven." The Bible tells us (Ps. 22:28), ". . . the kingdom is the Lord's: and he is the governor among the nations." The time for the fulfillment of promises is at hand. We are now in a new dispensation, for the Comforter has come. That Comforter is divine Science. Truth is now available to prove that God governs the nations as well as individuals. Spiritual man is governed by God. Right now, the kingdom of heaven is within you.
Science and Health says (p. 201), "The way to extract error from mortal mind is to pour in truth through flood-tides of Love." This is the way to extract error from individual consciousness, and it is also the way to heal collectively, to heal misunderstanding and hate which appear to exist among nations. No Christian can afford to be passive toward the establishment of God's kingdom. The student of Christian Science recognizes that spiritualized thought, which is potent to heal individuals, is also potent to heal the nations, and must be utilized to heal the nations. Let us seek to establish this kingdom in our own consciousness and to love our fellowman sufficiently to affirm each day that it is established in his consciousness. Then we can say with understanding (Matt. 6:13), ". . . thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever." If all Christians unite in such knowing, we shall see manifest (Luke 2:14), "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men."
